What is Pewter

The highest quality pewter is used which is a predominantly a tin alloy and contains no lead. This white metal is an alloy of tin with small amounts of antimony and copper. The tin gives it sheen, provides resistance to corrosion, and ductility, and prevents oxidation in casting of the metal. The antimony hardens and whitens the metal and its expanding properties whilst cooling gives the castings sharp, detailed impressions when taken from the mould. Copper is added for ductility and hardness. The proportions of antimony and copper may vary slightly, but the pewter contains no lead whatsoever.

The low melting temperature and ease with which pewter flows makes the metal ideal for casting.

Care & Cleaning

These hand-crafted pieces require a minimum amount of care to keep them in their original state and it is essential that it is hand-washed in warm, soapy water when necessary, rinsed in clean water and dried with a soft clean cloth. Do not place in the dishwasher or use a harsh abrasive material as this will cause the piece to become dull and grey.

Should any of your Diana Carmichael pieces be inadvertently placed in a dishwasher, use some of our liquid metal polish. Formulated to polish and protect pewter, this paste will restore the glow to any damaged piece. Just apply our metal polish with a soft cotton cloth in a circular motion until the cloth contact area has turned grey or black. Call +27 11 477 4588 to order or email us at sales@dianacarmichael.co.za

It is preferable not to store the pieces with other sharp objects as it will cause the piece to become marked.

Cared for properly it will last for generations.
